A single generic CV is unlikely to present your strongest case for every South African vacancy. A store supervisor, mine administrator and banking consultant may all need communication and computer skills, but each employer looks for different evidence. Tailoring means selecting and organising truthful information so the recruiter can quickly see how your experience matches the advertised work. It does not mean changing facts or copying claims you cannot support.
Start with the vacancy, not your old CV
Read the duties, minimum requirements and application instructions before editing anything. Highlight repeated skills, required systems, licences, qualifications and years of experience. Separate mandatory criteria from preferences. If the advert requires a driver’s licence, professional registration or a particular certificate, make its accurate status easy to find.
The Department of Employment and Labour’s official job-hunting guidance recommends updating a CV for each position and aligning its skills and abilities with the job. Keep a complete master CV, then make a focused copy for each serious application.
Show evidence that fits the sector
For retail roles, useful evidence may include customer service, stock control, cash handling, merchandising, shift supervision or meeting sales targets. For mining and related contractor roles, emphasise relevant safety procedures, site experience, equipment, technical records and licences. For banking, show accuracy, customer care, compliance awareness, analysis, targets and responsible handling of confidential information.
Convert vague statements into concise proof. Instead of saying you are “good with customers”, describe a real responsibility or result: resolving queries at a busy service desk, balancing a till, maintaining records or supporting a defined portfolio. Use numbers only when they are true and understandable.
Put the most relevant information first
Your name and reliable contact details should be clear. Follow with a short profile tailored to the role, then place the strongest matching skills, qualifications and recent experience where they are easy to scan. Employment history normally starts with the most recent role. Include dates, employer, position and relevant duties without burying the recruiter in unrelated detail.
If you are changing sectors, translate transferable experience carefully. Supervising a hospitality team may demonstrate scheduling, service recovery and stock responsibility relevant to retail. Accurate recordkeeping in a community organisation may support an administrative application. Explain the connection; do not expect the reader to guess it.
Use keywords naturally and keep the file readable
Use the advert’s genuine terminology where it accurately describes your background. This helps both human reviewers and recruitment systems recognise a match. Do not repeat keywords unnaturally or paste the entire job description. Use ordinary headings, consistent dates and a clean layout that remains readable when converted to PDF.
Proofread names, telephone numbers and email addresses. Open the final attachment after saving it. Name the file professionally, for example Thandi_Mokoena_CV_Store_Supervisor.pdf, unless the employer specifies a different convention.
Complete a vacancy-specific final check
- Every claim is accurate and can be discussed at interview.
- Mandatory qualifications and licences are visible.
- The strongest sector-relevant evidence appears early.
- Dates and job titles agree with your application form.
- The attachment and submission channel match the advert.

Keep one record for the next step
Save the advert, the documents used and the next action in one private folder. When the employer contacts you, compare its message with those records before sending anything else. This guide is practical preparation, not an announcement that a particular vacancy or programme is open.
