Employment Services of South Africa, commonly called ESSA, is an official Department of Employment and Labour service for work seekers and employers. Registering a profile can support a wider job-search routine, but it should not replace direct applications to suitable employers. Prepare accurate information first so your profile is useful and consistent with your CV.
Start at the official service
Use the official ESSA portal or reach it through the Department of Employment and Labour’s official online services. Check the full web address before entering personal details. Avoid links in unexpected messages that ask for payment, banking information or a password.
Registration interfaces can change, so follow the current on-screen instructions. Keep your own record of the email address, phone number and identity details used for the account, but never store your password in an unprotected document or send it to someone offering to register for you.
Prepare your information before starting
Have your current contact details, location, education, qualifications, licences, skills and employment history ready. Use the same names and dates that appear on your supporting documents. If a qualification is incomplete, record it accurately as in progress rather than completed.
Work through a list of occupations and skills that reflect work you can actually perform. Accurate matching is more valuable than selecting every available option. Consider the types of roles, locations and working arrangements you can realistically accept.
Build a complete work-seeker profile
Complete all relevant fields and review spellings, dates and phone numbers. Describe experience in plain language, including practical training, internships, volunteering or projects when relevant. Keep a separate master CV so you can compare the portal profile with applications sent elsewhere.
If the portal lets you upload documents, use clear file names and open each file before submission. Do not upload extra identity or financial documents unless the official process specifically requires them and you understand why they are needed.
Search and assess vacancies carefully
Use job title, occupation and location filters to narrow results. Open the full vacancy and compare the requirements with your qualifications and experience. Confirm the employer, duties, location, application method and closing date. An opportunity appearing on a platform does not remove the need to judge whether it is suitable and genuine.
Keep a simple application tracker with the vacancy, employer, date, reference and outcome. This prevents duplicate applications and helps you follow up through the correct channel.
Review search results at planned intervals instead of changing your profile for every listing. When a vacancy is unsuitable, record why and move on. When several suitable adverts request the same missing skill or current licence, use that pattern to guide legitimate training or renewal decisions. Do not add a credential to the profile until it is earned and can be verified.
Maintain your profile safely
- Update your phone, email, qualifications and availability when they change.
- Use a strong password that is not reused on other websites.
- Sign out on a shared computer and avoid saving credentials in a public browser.
- Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed placement or preferential access.
- Continue checking employer and government sites for suitable vacancies.

This article provides general job-search guidance. ESSA and the advertising employer remain the authoritative sources for registration and vacancy requirements.
Keep one record for the next step
Save the advert, the documents used and the next action in one private folder. When the employer contacts you, compare its message with those records before sending anything else. This guide is practical preparation, not an announcement that a particular vacancy or programme is open.
