Principal, Project Civil & Structural Engineer – AngloGold Ashanti

November 1, 2026

Job Description

Role Overview

AngloGold Ashanti requires a Principal Civil & Structural Engineer to help shape new plants, foundations, steelwork, earthworks, and water systems before construction begins. Operating as an internal technical expert across studies and growth initiatives, this position ensures safe, sound, and cost-effective designs. The professional bridges hands-on mining backgrounds with consultancy design knowledge, steering assignments from initial concepts through to final handover while collaborating with the Director of Studies, external consultancies, and operational units.

Key Responsibilities

Offer specialized civil and structural expertise to the study group spanning conceptual phases through to building stages. Direct external consultancy partners regarding studies, evaluating their blueprints for safety, standard, and financial efficiency. Assist brownfield expansion initiatives during delivery phases when specialized assistance is required. Evaluate alternative technologies and select optimal site choices. Mitigate unnecessary over-engineering by advocating for safe, compliant, and properly sized alternatives. Audit plans for safety margins, constructability, and hazard factors encompassing earthworks, foundations, steel fabrication, drainage, and geotechnical matters. Evaluate financial and schedule implications tied to vendor alternatives and construction agreements. Coordinate alongside global colleagues and consultants to maintain elevated benchmarks. Direct and mentor project personnel while uplifting junior and senior practitioners. Guide multi-functional and international choices without direct command authority. Incorporate operational feedback to ensure operational viability for on-site personnel.

Required Qualifications

Possess a Bachelor of Engineering qualification focused on civil or structural disciplines. Maintain active registration as a Professional Engineer alongside the Engineering Council of South Africa, which is a mandatory prerequisite. Accumulate eight to ten years of professional practice within mineral processing, mining infrastructure including earthworks, tailing storage facilities, and roadways alongside capital-intensive assignments. Retain a minimum of five years functioning at senior, principal, or specialist tiers, preferably within an owner team overseeing engineering, procurement, and construction agreements. Demonstrate extensive background covering preliminary study tiers through to implementation, commissioning, and operational transfer. Gold mining backgrounds represent a distinct advantage, while broader mining experience remains highly regarded.

Skills and Competencies

Advanced familiarity with heavy industrial civil and structural engineering specifications, dynamic machine foundations, conveyor systems, and water management. Profound grasp of relevant engineering standards and codes. Robust capabilities in risk-oriented technical validation, safety-in-design, and constructability audits. Exceptional analytical aptitude for navigating ambiguous or fast-paced circumstances. Superior interpersonal and persuasion abilities across diverse geographies. Practical, value-driven perspective coupled with the courage to question existing plans. High motivation toward mentoring colleagues and fostering a continuous learning culture.

Work Environment and Expectations

Stationed within Johannesburg accompanied by routine journeys to operational mines. Close daily interaction with the Director of Studies and outsourced engineering groups requires strong remote and cross-location collaboration. Mining facilities represent risk-sensitive areas requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and leadership by example.

Benefits Summary

Medical coverage, support programs for workers, and wellness programs. Company-supported pension or provident fund provisions. Annual leave, sick leave, and official holidays aligned with organizational policies.
